Safety Administrator

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma, G.E.D. equivalent and/or relevant experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience conducting safety program activities.
  • Must obtain/maintain a LEVEL A license from EPA UST training within first Thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Continuing education courses relevant to requirements and responsibilities above.
  • OSHA 30-hour training certification must be secured within the first 90 days of hire.
  • FEMA ICS certifications 100, 200, 700, 800, 300, 400 are required for this position.
  • Certification as a Safety Professional preferred but not required.

SUMMARY Responsible for assisting in the administration of GTB Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Safety Programs. Perform, coordinate and monitor safety-related functions to ensure compliance with safety programs and Health and Safety occupational compliance in all areas of operations. Lead the safety program development and implementation, safety audits, inspections and investigations for all EDC controlled operations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, recommend, and implement workplace processes and procedures to help prevent and protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, materials, and conditions.
  • Identify and resolve hazards in the workplace, investigate, and write necessary reports as required.
  • Responsible for conducting field investigations (employee and customers) of all accidents that cause personal injury.
  • Direct accident investigations and review reports of injuries to determine their cause (root cause analysis).
  • Compile and analyze all trending data for accident and incident reports including near-miss events and Workers' Compensation claims.
  • Make recommendations for implementing preventative measured to correct unsafe conditions and actions.
  • Consult with claims adjusters and/or medical unit representatives to resolve problems with on-the-job injuries and recurring illnesses.
  • Work with insurance vendors and internal personnel to complete submitted claims for worker's compensation incidents occurring on EDC property.
  • Conduct routine safety and hazard inspections and evaluations of all EDC operated facilities and properties to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and regulations.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the GTB Safety Program, work tracking and reporting, and other compliance programs.
  • Administration of software/programs to support Safety Training, Emergency Communications, and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) tracking.
  • Advise property management regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by Tribal and Federal agencies such as OSHA, EPA, and NiOSH.
  • Respond and assist with emergencies and prepare reports of findings and submit recommendations to supervisor and/or property management.
  • Manage and keep current the approved driver's list and review MVR's for compliance for the EDC.
  • Develop, implement, manage and instruct safety training and accident prevention programs such as OSHA/TOSHA to reduce or eliminate occupational accidents, injuries, illnesses, deaths and/or financial losses associated with employees and guests.
  • Draft and update Safety and Loss Prevention policies and plans for all GTB sites as necessary
  • Complete, review, monitor and follow-up on a regular base OSHA 300 logs, 300A's and 301's, file and post all according to OSHA annual guidelines.
  • Using analytical skills, assess injury data and develop action plans to target reductions in problem areas.
  • Provide regular written monthly reports to supervisor and/or management and assist with the preparation of internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Work in conjunction with each facility regarding safety programs, emergency and evacuation drills for all properties including maintaining and/or updating plans/procedures.
  • Engage and assist with environmental health food and kitchen inspections and organize necessary staff trainings.
  • Prepare reports required by OSHA, EPA and other federal and Tribal agencies.
  • Assure company compliance with Federal, Tribal, Safety or Operation regulations.
  • Willingness to cross train in related areas of operations and provide support.
  • Assist GTB government with safety related items such as safety training, emergency communications, and inspections.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Risk Management.

  • Knowledge of the safety rules and regulations mandated by Federal and Tribal law
  • Knowledge of occupational safety policies and procedures.
  • A working understanding of Safety, Environmental and Hygiene regulations.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, NiOSH, NFPA, IFC, FDA, and EPA standards and ability to apply all standards.
  • Familiarity with workers' compensation procedures and back to work programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, and outside vendors or contractors.
  • Ability to speak and effectively train large and small groups.
  • Willingness to continue training in multiple disciplines related to the advancement of the position to meet the needs of the business.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and be insurable by the Tribe's insurance.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to move or carry job-related objects or materials up to 30 pounds. Physical activities include but are not limited to, grip, grab, squat, lift, see, hear, climb ladders, work atop buildings/structures, reach, bend, stretch, kneel, crawl, work in small, tight or restricted spaces, work below ground level in confined spaces, work outside during incline weather conditions, construction zones, open water and/or being in small spaces for long periods of time. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as, hazardous conditions, emergency conditions, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, mold, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.


TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

Requires the ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency. Incumbents may face strong adversarial situations on a regular basis and must often give negative information to management.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of job-related and/or office equipment. Work is normally performed in a typical mobile field and interior work environment. Excellent time management skills required. Frequent local travel, out of town and overnight on occasion, driving during incline weather and emergencies is required. Must be flexible and willing to work the occasional evening, weekend, or holiday, and must be available at all times in the event of an emergency.


COMMENTS

Native American and Tribal Preference will apply. Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to work flexible hours and to take on additional responsibilities when asked. Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality.
