Public Relations Manager

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years of professional communications or media experience that could include a combination of journalism, public relations or related communications experience, either in a corporate or agency setting
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have a significant PR and/or media background with hospitality knowledge.

 

SUMMARY

Grand Traverse Resort and Casinos, the Midwest's largest year-round vacation destination based near Traverse City, Michigan, is seeking a full-time Public Relations Manager to lead all aspects of media relations for Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. This is an energetic position, perfect for someone that is self-motivated, accountable and eager to step in and represent our award-winning resort to the world. It's a position that requires creativity, story pitching and entertaining'while handling all logistics needed to ensure media visiting our property leave feeling thoroughly impressed. The individual will be part of the EDC marketing department and work closely with the Marketing Director, Chief Marketing Officer, General Manager, CEO, and PR consultants.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Create and execute public relations campaigns that will generate positive coverage for Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, with additional PR support for Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel, and Leelanau Sands Casino & Lodge as needed
  • Serve as the primary representative for all media interviews, media requests and on-camera speaking opportunities for Grand Traverse Resort and Spa
  • Coordinate and lead familiarization visits from writers, editors, bloggers and other media professionals
  • Respond promptly and professionally to incoming requests for photography, video and general resort information
  • Assist the General Manager, CEO, and others in formulating responses to media inquiries and addressing any emergencies
  • Travel to media outlets in target markets, as needed, to pitch story ideas and generate media coverage
  • Manage and grow an up-to-date list of travel media professionals, bloggers and other influential contacts
  • Manage the organization's official media kit, including both in-print and online
  • Maintain regular positive contact with members of the local media, tourism organizations, community leaders and other influential organizations
  • Manage and edit Barefoot magazine, the official lifestyle magazine of the Resort
  • Assist the marketing department with copywriting, advertorial content and proofing
  • Assist with a variety of internal communication pieces as needed, including writing and editing of company newsletters, memos, and email announcements
  • Think quickly and communicate clearly in high-pressure and quick-changing situations
  • Other duties as assigned

 

OTHER NECESSARY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • 5 years of professional communications or media experience that could include a combination of journalism, public relations or related communications experience, either in a corporate or agency setting
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations, communication, journalism, or marketing
  • Strong writing, proofing, and editing with an ability to write quickly, persuasively and without grammar or punctuation errors
  • Polished communication skills, both written and verbal, and a high comfort level speaking on camera
  • Ability to host and entertain groups of people with a passionate, charismatic personality
  • Experience handling a variety of emergency or crisis situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on being a great team player
  • A self-motivated drive with an ability to handle different tasks
  • A strong attention to detail
  • Experience in the tourism industry is preferred, but not required.
  • Computer experience mandatory; basic proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of software applications required

 

Must possess the ability to evaluate the changing needs of the business and/or department and to respond accordingly. Must have excellent customer service and communication skills both verbal and written. Must be a team player with a positive attitude. Must be highly organized and able to handle multiple tasks at one time. Must be able to complete tasks and projects in a timely manner by prioritizing obligations and time. Must possess the ability to work with various personalities while maintaining impartiality. Must respond to supervisory guidance and assignments and accept constructive criticisms in order to learn new, updated information. The needs for quickness and ease of adjustment to the work environment and flexibility to change are essential in this position.

 

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid Michigan driver's license and be insurable by the Tribes' insurance carrier.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

This position requires someone that can handle high-stress situations where the organization is to be represented to the public on a variety of matters, including both positive and potentially controversial matters. This position requires someone that has the knowledge, skills and critical decision making to properly represent the organization to the public at large. There may be unexpected demands set on this position for additional work or urgent work. Must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations while remaining focused and professional. Must be able to deal with difficult people without losing perspective. Must be able to work productively under strict time restraints with veritable deadlines

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

May be required to lift up to 50lbs. And be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. May also be required to reach, bend, stretch, kneel, crawl, lift and carry.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have any direct reports.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position works mostly indoors with limited outdoor journalist tours throughout the year. Primarily typical office environment. Position is primarily based at a desk. This position may require 40+ hours per week with flexibility in weekend and weeknight scheduling for public relations meetings and events. Must be able and willing to work in a crowded, loud smoking environment. Must be able to handle being under constant surveillance. May be required to work in small, enclosed spaces. Must practice all safety policies, procedures and standards as set by OSHA.

 

COMMENTS

Native American and Tribal Preference will apply. Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Must be able to work flexible hours and to take on additional responsibilities when asked. Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality.
