C-Store/Retail Operations Director

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Associates Degree in applicable field of study plus three (3) years of multi-site c-store/retail management experience or; a High school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED) with an equivalent combination of college education and c-store/retail management experience.
  • Requires at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Requires significant experience and proficiency with revenue and cost analysis, inventory and retail pricing strategies.
  • Must be highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office specifically in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must have the ability to utilize systems specifically made for C-Store and Fuel Operations.
  • Must have previous experience with developing and managing operational and capital budgets.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol screen as a condition of employment.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, holidays and/or days off and variable shifts.
  • Must have acceptable communication skills, verbal/written and organization skills.
  • Must possess a valid, Michigan driver's license and be insurable by the Tribe.
  • Must be able to work with the general public.
  • Must successfully pass a job interview.

 

SUMMARY

The C-Store/Retail Operations Director position will be responsible for the oversight, planning, development and/or expanding of our off or near-site retail operations and retail leasing, which includes but not limited to, Eagle Town Market and Turtle Creek Market Convenience Stores for the Grand Traverse Band Economic Development Corporation (GTB EDC).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees and leads assigned store operations, which may include lease management.
  • Develops and implements the overall operational strategy of the c-stores and other retail businesses to drive the productivity, profitability, expense control and customer satisfaction of all locations.
  • Develops and implements operational policies and procedures, inventory management, pricing strategy, store metrics and goals.
  • Provides leadership and mentoring for individual store managers.
  • May participate with executive management and Tribal leadership regarding master planning properties held by the Grand Traverse Band Economic Development Corporation.
  • Prepares and manages annual budget and expenditures for business development and operations.
  • Prepares reports on revenue and profitability activity.
  • Assists with project management regarding site and building design and construction.
  • Evaluates business development goals on a regular basis.
  • Ensures all customer complaints have follow up in a timely manner and present a positive image for the company.
  • Ensures compliance of employees with established company policies, procedures and standards. 
  • Ensures confidentiality of GTB EDC business development ideas and trade secrets.
  • Stays informed regarding market conditions and business opportunities.
  • Be able to deliver core customer service values.
  • Adhere to company policy regarding strict confidentiality.
  • Required to attend on-going training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of study.
  • Eight (8) or more years of multi-site c-store/retail management experience.
  • Retail lease management experience.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must respond to supervisory guidance and assignments and accept constructive feedback to learn new, updated information.  The needs for quickness and ease of adjustment to the work environment and flexibility to change are essential in this position. Working knowledge of calculator and POS/cash register. Typing skills and general computer skills and familiarity of Microsoft products. Must possess strong mathematical skills, customer service, financial management, inventory control, computer knowledge and cash sales experience.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mentor individual store managers with store management and processes, including inventory control, cost of goods sold, pricing strategy, supervises subordinates, staff scheduling and driving inside sales.
  • Task delegation to achieve maximum results.
  • Reinforcement of all policies and procedures.
  • Monitor department expenditures and inventory.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of all departmental operations.
  • Monitor, take part or perform interviews.
  • Staff Performance Evaluations, attendance, scheduling, employee file maintenance.
  • Employee corrective actions including terminations.
  • Coordinate with department staff for daily operations.

 

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Laptop computer/PC, multi-line telephone, Point of Sale system/cash register, copy machine, fax.

 

MENTAL/PHYICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to work in a fast paced, stressful atmosphere, having the ability to deal with difficult situations and people without losing perspective while remaining focused positive and professional. Must be able to work productively under strict time restraints with variable deadlines. Must be able to handle guest and employee disputes, which may involve problem solving. Occasion lifting and/or moving objects up to 45lbs.  Requires bending, stretching, stooping and climbing a ladder.  Using a dolly to move boxes around. Must be able and willing to work in a crowded, loud, smoking environment. Must be able to handle being under constant surveillance. Must practice all safety policies, procedures and standards as set by OSHA. Must be able to travel regionally, locally and from property to property.
