This is an appointed position as a Corporate Officer. Applicants must provide a current resume and a letter of intent to be considered.


The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports directly to, and is subject to the control of, the EDC Board of Directors.  The CEO is responsible for the supervision and control of the day-to-day management of all business and affairs of the Economic Development Corporation.  The CEO will provide this executive leadership to build an organization dedicated to delivering and selling exceptional services while ensuring that revenue and profit goals are achieved.  The CEO will focus much of his/her attention on developing and driving profitable business operations, both on a short-term and long-term basis.   


  • Manages and directs the organization toward its primary objectives, based on profit and return on capital. Establishes current and long-range objectives, plans, and policies, subject to approval by the EDC Board. Builds upon foundation of current organization as well as crafting and executing the EDC's continued gaming and non-gaming growth strategy.
  • Working knowledge of casino operations including budget, facility management, promotions, advertising, casino marketing, and public relations as well as knowledge of casino rules, procedures and regulations pertaining to Indian gaming operations.
  • Provide the energy and guidance necessary to motivate staff throughout the organization. Establishes and maintains an effective system of communication to promote a sense of participation and involvement.
  • Dispenses advice, guidance, direction, and authorization to carry out major plans and procedures, consistent with established policies and EDC Board resolutions or directions.
  • Oversees the adequacy and soundness of the organization's financial structure.
  • Reviews operating reports and other financial statements of the organization, comparing them to established objectives, and take steps to ensure appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results in all economic climates.
  • Plan, direct and advise the EDC Board of all investigations and negotiations pertaining to the acquisition of businesses necessary for submission to EDC Board approval.
  • Acts as liaison with public officials and community assuring organization's mission and services are consistently presented in a positive image to its stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates knowledge with gaming and hospitality industry's concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Recommends yearly budget for EDC Board approval and prudently manage organization's resources within those budget guidelines.
  • Effectively manages and oversees the marketing, human resources, financial, legal, IT, food and beverage, lodging and gaming departments according to policies and procedures that conform to current laws and regulations. Ensures that all staff and the EDC Board have sufficient and up-to-date information.
  • Supports operations and administration of the EDC Board by advising and informing the Board members, interfacing between Board and staff, and supporting Board's evaluation of chief executive.
  • Other duties as assigned by the EDC Board, within scope of position.


Hands-on, collaborative, and resourceful manager. Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills required.  Must have proven track record of personally providing excellent customer service.  Demonstrated track record in business planning, managing substantial budgets and experience in all operational functions.  Knowledge of start-up operations required.  Ability to forecast revenue and expenses and provide accurate projections for cash flow as required by an increasing need for working capital in a high growth gaming and non-gaming environment.  Demonstrated ability to lead/orchestrate negotiations in major transactions. 


  • Ten years of progressive experience in a leadership role as a General Manager or Chief Operations Officer that encompassed managing all operations of a company with a significant number of employees. Extensive experience working with all functions of a company including Legal, Human Resources, Finance, and Marketing, and all sub-departments of each, as well as substantial exposure to the surrounding community and the public with regards to the company's image.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or a related field required. Advanced degree preferred. 
  • Proven track record of substantial equity value creation, managing profitability and cash flow, acquisition experience, and deep industry knowledge in Indian gaming operations.


  • Task delegation to achieve maximum results.
  • Promote the hiring and advancement of qualified Grand Traverse Band members according to the Native American and Tribal Preference.
  • Reinforcement of policies and procedures.
  • Directing departmental expenditures.
  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge of all departmental operations.
  • Performing employee disciplinary actions and corrections including hiring and terminating employees.
  • Planning and organizing all departmental functions.
  • Maintaining open lines of communication with other departments and within the department itself.


Must be physically able to operate a variety of job-related machines and/or Office Equipment. Must be able to move or carry job-related objects or materials. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary or office environment work.


Requires the ability to interact with people (i.e. staff, supervisor, general public and elected officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions in a focused and professional manner. Must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations when confronted with an emergency. Must be able to work productively under strict time restraints with variable deadlines.  Must be able to make quick, informed decisions that may have a major bearing on the financial well being of the EDC. Must be able to make qualified decisions with no direction or managerial input for the good of the company.  Must also be prepared to be responsible and accountable for any decisions or actions made during the course of work. 


Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.  Travel is a normal and necessary function of this position. 


Native American and Tribal Preference will apply.  Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Must be able to work flexible hours and to take on additional responsibilities when asked.  Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality.
